Privacy Policy

Effective 2 August 2026. Last updated 2 September 2026.

The short version. We do not collect your personal data. There are no user accounts and no advertising. Everything you do in the apps stays on your own device. The website counts page views without cookies and without identifying anyone.

Scope

This policy explains how Gurbani Prakash handles information in connection with:

  • Gurbani Read Along, the mobile application for Android and iOS
  • Gurbani Read Along, the progressive web app at gurbaniprakash.org
  • Abhyas: Nitnem and Path Counter, the Android application
  • The gurbaniprakash.org website

Gurbani Prakash is a non-profit seva initiative. These applications are offered free of charge, with no subscription, membership, or monetisation of any kind.

What we do not collect

The applications do not collect, transmit, sell, rent, or share any personal information. Specifically, we do not collect:

  • Your name, email address, phone number, or any contact details
  • Your location, GPS coordinates, or approximate region
  • Device identifiers, advertising IDs, or IMEI numbers
  • Contacts, photos, calendar entries, call logs, or SMS messages
  • Crash reports or diagnostic telemetry
  • Anything that could be used to recognise you on a later visit

There is no registration and no sign-in. Every feature works without providing any information about yourself.

What is stored on your device

Some information is saved locally in your device's private application storage so the apps are useful. This data never leaves your device and is never visible to us.

  • Reading position and bookmarks, to resume your Nitnem or Sehaj Path where you left off
  • Reading history and Shabad Mala counts, so you can review your own practice
  • Display preferences: font size, font family, colours, dark mode, scroll speed
  • Downloaded audio, so offline listening does not re-download

On the web application the equivalent preferences are stored in your browser's local storage, on your own computer or phone.

Network connections

Audio hosting

Audio recordings are hosted on the Internet Archive. When you play or download a recitation, your device requests that file directly from archive.org. As with visiting any website, archive.org may record standard server information such as your IP address and the file requested, governed by its own privacy policy at archive.org/about/terms.php. We do not receive, store, or have access to any of it.

Gurbani text and timings

All Gurbani text and all word-by-word timing data are bundled inside the application. Reading, read-along highlighting, searching and bookmarking work fully offline.

Website hosting

The website is served by Cloudflare Pages. Like any web server or content delivery network, Cloudflare records standard request logs, which may include IP address, browser type and pages requested, and applies security measures to protect the site. These are handled by Cloudflare under its own privacy policy at cloudflare.com/privacypolicy.

Counting visits to the website

We use Cloudflare Web Analytics to see how many people visit the site and which pages they read. It is the only measurement on the site, and it sets no cookies, stores nothing on your device, and collects nothing that identifies you or that could be used to follow you between visits or across other websites. What we can see is aggregate: page views, which pages are popular, which country a visit came from, and which site a visitor arrived from.

We do not use cookies, pixels, advertising trackers, or any analytics that profiles individual visitors. The mobile applications contain no analytics of any kind at all.

Until 2 September 2026 the web application used Google Analytics. It has been removed and replaced with the cookieless measurement described above.

Permissions, and why each one exists

  • Internet access (Android, iOS): to stream and download Gurbani audio from archive.org.
  • Background audio (iOS): so a recitation keeps playing when you lock the screen or switch apps.
  • Photo library (iOS): only invoked if you choose to import or export a backup file. We never read your photos.
  • Camera (iOS): referenced by the system file picker. The app never opens or uses your camera.
  • Location (iOS): referenced by the system file picker component only. The app never requests or uses your location.

The photo library, camera and location entries exist because Apple requires an explanation for every system component an app links against, even when the app does not use that capability.

Sharing and exporting your own data

You can export bookmarks or reading history to a file, and share a line of Gurbani through your device's standard share sheet. These happen only when you choose them, and the data goes only where you send it. Nothing is transmitted to us.

Children

The applications are suitable for all ages and are designed to help young learners read Gurbani with correct pronunciation. Because no personal information is collected from anyone, none is collected from children.

Retention and deletion

Since we hold no data about you, there is nothing on our side to retain or delete. Everything stored by the applications lives on your device, and you can remove it by clearing the app's storage, uninstalling the application, or clearing your browser's site data for gurbaniprakash.org.

Sources and attribution

Gurbani text is sourced from the BaniDB API by the Khalis Foundation. Audio recordings are sourced from publicly available recitations, including those by Giani Mehnga Singh Ji, Bhai Jarnail Singh Ji and Giani Thakur Singh Ji, and are used solely for devotional, non-commercial purposes. If you hold rights to any recording used here and wish it removed, please write and we will act promptly.

Changes

If this policy changes, the revised version will be published here with an updated effective date. Should a future version ever introduce any data collection, it will be described here clearly and in advance.
