Answer

What does Gurbani say about suffering?

In short

Gurbani refuses the two easy answers. It does not say suffering is an illusion, and it does not say it is punishment. Pain and pleasure are described as coming together from the same source, written into creation from the start. The line that carries the most weight goes further and inverts the usual ranking: suffering is the medicine and pleasure the disease, because comfort is where a person forgets. What is offered is not an explanation of why pain comes but a way of standing inside it.

Gurbani's first move on this subject is to refuse a division that most people make instinctively.

dhookh sookh prabh dhevanahaar

God is the Giver of pain and pleasure.

Guru Arjan Dev Ji  ·  Ang 283

Both from the same hand. Guru Nanak Dev Ji says the same in terms of hukam: Ang 223, and Guru Amar Daas Ji locates it at the moment of creation rather than as a later correction: Ang 787. Pain was not introduced when something went wrong. It was written in alongside its opposite.

Then comes the line that the rest of the subject turns on, and it is one of the most striking in the whole corpus.

dhukh dhaaroo sukh rog bhiaa jaa sukh taam na hoiee

Suffering is the medicine, and pleasure the disease, because where there is pleasure, there is no desire for God.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji  ·  Ang 469

Suffering is the medicine and pleasure the disease. The reason given is contained in the same line: where there is pleasure, there is no longing for God. Guru Nanak Dev Ji is not recommending pain. He is observing what each state does to a person's attention, and noting that comfort is where the search stops.

He is careful to say both things at once elsewhere: ੧ Ang 1240. In the fire of pain, mortals die, and pain is also the cure. Neither half is dropped. The suffering is real and it is doing something.

Guru Arjan Dev Ji names the mechanism plainly: Ang 813. Pain comes when one forgets, peace when one remembers, which puts the variable inside the person rather than in their circumstances. And he identifies what actually makes a situation unbearable: Ang 400. As long as the hukam is not understood, the person remains miserable, which is a claim about resistance rather than about pain itself.

What is promised is modest and precisely worded.

jis no hoi kirapaal tis kaa dhookh jai

One unto whom You are Merciful, has his sufferings depart.

Guru Arjan Dev Ji  ·  Ang 521

Grace, not merit. Guru Nanak Dev Ji describes the same in the language of a physician who has made the diagnosis: Ang 1189. He knows the disease, and so He can remove the pain.

The last thing is the one that matters most in practice, because Gurbani does not ask anyone to pretend. Ang 582. Let him weep. Grief is not forbidden and it is not evidence of weak faith. What is asked is only that the weeping happen inside the relationship rather than outside it.

dhookh sookh prabh dhevanahaar

dhukh dhaaroo sukh rog bhiaa jaa sukh taam na hoiee

jis no hoi kirapaal tis kaa dhookh jai
