Answer

What does Gurbani say about how we speak?

In short

Gurbani treats speech as conduct rather than as expression, and gives a single test for it: speak what brings honour. Harsh speech is described as damaging the one who uses it before it reaches anyone else, and sweet speech is called the thing that binds affection. The strongest instruction is also the simplest, and it is absolute: do not call anyone bad. Guru Arjan Dev Ji goes further and rules out calling anyone good or bad at all, which removes the judging rather than merely softening it.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji gives the test in five words, on Ang 15, and everything else on the subject follows from it.

baabaa boleeaai pat hoi

O Baba, speak only that which will bring you honor.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji  ·  Ang 15

Speak what brings honour. He immediately explains what that means, and the standard is not eloquence: Ang 15. Those words are acceptable which, when spoken, bring honour. The measure is the effect, not the intention and not the cleverness.

The other side is put in the same passage and it locates the damage precisely.

fikaa bol viguchanaa sun moorakh man ajaan

Harsh words bring only grief. Listen, O foolish and ignorant mind!

Guru Nanak Dev Ji  ·  Ang 15

Harsh words bring grief, and the grief named is the speaker's. Guru Nanak Dev Ji says elsewhere what it costs: Ang 933. Love breaks when the speech goes sour. That is not a moral rule so much as an observation about how relationships actually fail.

The positive form is stated as a bond rather than a nicety: Ang 143. There is a bond between love and words of sweetness. Sheikh Farid Ji collects the whole discipline into one line: Ang 1384. Humility is the word, forgiveness the virtue, and sweet speech the mantra.

Then the instruction that goes furthest, and it is worth reading exactly.

Do not speak ill of others, or get involved in arguments.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji  ·  Ang 566

Do not call anyone bad. Guru Nanak Dev Ji repeats it and attaches it to literacy itself: Ang 473. Read these words and understand this. Of everything a person might take from the page, this is the thing he singles out as the point of being able to read.

Guru Arjan Dev Ji extends it past the obvious.

buraa bhalaa koiee na kaheejai

Do not say that anyone is good or bad.

Guru Arjan Dev Ji  ·  Ang 186

Do not say that anyone is good or bad. Removing praise as well as blame is the harder half, and it is deliberate. What is being given up is the position of the one who assesses others, and that is a great deal more than politeness.

Bhagat Kabeer Ji supplies the practice that makes it possible: Ang 872. In all speech, consider carefully. Not silence, and not suppression. A pause long enough for the judgement to be noticed before it becomes a sentence.

baabaa boleeaai pat hoi

fikaa bol viguchanaa sun moorakh man ajaan

buraa bhalaa koiee na kaheejai
