Answer

What does Gurbani say about ritual and pilgrimage?

In short

Gurbani's argument here is one argument made many times, and it is narrower than it is often taken to be. It does not say bathing, fasting, thread or scripture are wrong. It says they do not reach the place that needs cleaning, and that treating them as a substitute for that work is the error. The image is repeated until it cannot be missed: outward washing leaves the inward filth exactly where it was. What is asked for instead is understanding and love, without which, Gurbani says, the observance is not neutral but corrupt.

The core of the argument is a single question, asked by Guru Nanak Dev Ji and never really improved on afterwards.

teerath naataa kiaa kare man meh mail gumaan

But what is the use of bathing at sacred shrines of pilgrimage, when the filth of stubborn pride is within the mind?

Guru Nanak Dev Ji  ·  Ang 61

Not that bathing is forbidden, but that it is beside the point while the mind carries what it carries. He states the futility more sharply elsewhere: Ang 473. Sixty-eight shrines, and the filth stays.

Guru Amar Daas Ji supplies the reasoning, and it is the clearest line on the subject in the whole corpus.

man mailai sabh kichh mailaa tan dhotai man hachhaa na hoi

When the mind is filthy, everything is filthy; by washing the body, the mind is not cleaned.

Guru Amar Daas Ji  ·  Ang 558

Body and mind are different objects, and water reaches one of them. He repeats it plainly, Ang 88, and Guru Nanak Dev Ji names what the inward filth actually consists of: Ang 598. That last line is worth noticing, because it identifies the real objection. The pilgrim is not being mocked for bathing. He is being asked why he is scrubbing the outside while greed and falsehood sit untouched inside.

The same argument is then applied to every other observance in turn. On the sacred thread, Guru Nanak Dev Ji works through how it is actually made, Ang 471, and follows the wearer to the end: Ang 471. The thread is spun, twisted, worn, and does not travel.

On scripture, the point is that reading and understanding are not the same act.

pa(n)ddit vaacheh potheeaa naa boojheh veechaar

The Pandits, the religious scholars, read their books, but they do not understand the real meaning.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji  ·  Ang 56

And on ritual worship generally, Guru Arjan Dev Ji states the strongest form of the claim: Ang 252. Not merely useless. Corrupt, because the observance has taken the place of the thing it was meant to serve. Guru Amar Daas Ji says the same of the whole apparatus: ੭ Ang 841.

It is worth being accurate about what this does and does not amount to. Gurbani is not anti-ritual in the sense of dismissing form. It keeps its own practices: bani read at fixed times, kirtan, the sangat, amrit vela. What it refuses is the exchange in which an outward act is offered in place of an inward change, and it refuses that wherever it appears, including inside its own house.

teerath naataa kiaa kare man meh mail gumaan

man mailai sabh kichh mailaa tan dhotai man hachhaa na hoi

pa(n)ddit vaacheh potheeaa naa boojheh veechaar
