Answer

What does Gurbani say about controlling the mind?

In short

The image Gurbani uses for the mind is an elephant, and it is chosen for a reason. An elephant is not evil and not weak. It is strong, valuable and impossible to force, which is exactly the problem. Gurbani states plainly that conquering the mind is conquering the world, and equally plainly that nobody succeeds without doing it. What it does not do is recommend willpower. The mind is described as being stilled by the Shabad, calmed the way waves settle rather than the way an animal is beaten.

Gurbani's picture of the mind is an animal, and a particular one.

man ku(n)char kaiaa udhiaanai

The mind is an elephant in the forest of the body.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji  ·  Ang 221

Guru Nanak Dev Ji puts the elephant in the forest of the body. Elsewhere he sharpens it: Ang 351, a drunken elephant. The choice matters. An elephant is not a rat or a snake. It is powerful and worth having, and the problem is not that it is bad but that it is not going where you want and cannot be made to.

The behaviour described is wandering rather than wickedness. Ang 712, and Guru Ram Das Ji gives the detail anyone who has tried to sit still will recognise: Ang 170. Not for an instant.

The claim Gurbani then makes about this is large.

jin gur parasaadhee man jeetiaa jag tineh jitaanaa ||8

Those who conquer their own minds, by Guru's Grace, conquer the world. ||8||

Guru Amar Daas Ji  ·  Ang 1089

Conquer the mind and you have conquered the world. Bhagat Kabeer Ji says the same, and Guru Amar Daas Ji states the negative form so there is no ambiguity: without conquering the mind, no one is successful. He also names the consequence: Ang 490. Maya does not stick to such a person again.

Which raises the obvious question of method, and here Gurbani declines the answer most traditions give. It does not recommend force. Ang 789, where the Guru holds the mind still, and Guru Amar Daas Ji describes the manner of it exactly.

man ke tara(n)g sabadh nivaare rasanaa sahaj subhaiee

The Shabad calms the turbulent waves of the mind; the tongue is intuively imbued with peace.

Guru Amar Daas Ji  ·  Ang 1233

Waves are not defeated. They subside. The Shabad is described as doing to the mind what stillness does to water, and that is a different kind of action from restraint. Guru Nanak Dev Ji says the same in terms of what fills the space: Ang 934. The wandering stops when the mind has something better to hold.

Bhagat Kabeer Ji reduces the whole matter to one line, and it is the most useful sentence on the subject.

mamaa man siau kaaj hai man saadhe sidh hoi

MAMMA: The mortal's business is with his own mind; one who disciplines his mind attains perfection.

Bhagat Kabeer Ji  ·  Ang 342

Your business is with your own mind. Not with the world, not with other people, not with circumstances. Everything else in Gurbani about anger, greed, lust and ego is downstream of that single relocation of the problem.

man ku(n)char kaiaa udhiaanai

jin gur parasaadhee man jeetiaa jag tineh jitaanaa ||8

man ke tara(n)g sabadh nivaare rasanaa sahaj subhaiee

mamaa man siau kaaj hai man saadhe sidh hoi
