Answer
What does Gurbani say about the Guru?
In short
Gurbani uses two families of image for the Guru and they say different things. The first is light: without the Guru there is pitch darkness, and the Guru is the lamp lit in it. The second is crossing: the Guru is the ladder, the boat, the raft and the boatman, without which no one gets across. Together they say the Guru is not an intermediary who carries a message but the means by which a person sees, and the means by which they get somewhere. What is removed is described as doubt and duality rather than lack of information.
The starkest statement is also the most repeated, appearing in nearly identical words across four different authors.
baajh guroo hai a(n)dh a(n)dhaaraa
Without the Guru, there is only pitch-black darkness.
Guru Amar Daas Ji joins the darkness to a practical consequence,
Ang 244, and Bhatt Nal states the same in the Swaiye:
Ang 1399. That a line recurs this often across the corpus is itself information. It is being treated as a settled premise rather than an argument still being made.
Against the darkness stands the lamp, and the image is careful. Guru Amar Daas Ji writes ੨
Ang 39, and Guru Arjan Dev Ji uses medicine instead:
Ang 293. A lamp does not create what the room contains. Ointment does not create the thing the eye then sees. In both figures the Guru changes the seeing, not the object, which is consistent with everything Gurbani says about the divine already being present in every heart.
The second family of images is about movement rather than sight.
gur pauRee beRee guroo gur tulahaa har naau
The Guru is the Ladder, the Guru is the Boat, and the Guru is the Raft to take me to the Lord's Name.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji piles them up because no single one is sufficient: a ladder for climbing, a boat for water too deep to stand in, a raft for someone with no boat. He returns to it elsewhere, ੧
Ang 1040, and Bhatt Gayandh adds the figure that closes off self-rescue:
Ang 1401. The Guru is the boat and the one steering it.
What is it that the Guru actually removes? Not ignorance of facts. Guru Nanak Dev Ji names it as
Ang 153, and elsewhere pairs it with the problem of a mind that will not settle:
Ang 730. Doubt and duality are the targets, and both are conditions of a person rather than gaps in their knowledge.
That is why Gurbani never presents the Guru as a source of information to be consulted. The Guru is what makes a person able to see what is in front of them and able to cross what they could not cross alone, and the light and the boat are two ways of saying the same thing.

baajh guroo hai a(n)dh a(n)dhaaraa
gur pauRee beRee guroo gur tulahaa har naau
