Answer
How does Gurbani describe God?
In short
Gurbani gives the answer in its very first line. God is One. Truth is the Name. The Creator, present throughout what has been created, fearless, without enmity, beyond time, never taking birth, existing of itself, and reached through the Guru's grace. Everything that follows in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji expands on that one statement, and its most insistent point is that this same One is not far away but dwells within every heart.
Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji opens with the answer, placed before any composition begins so that everything after it is read in its light.
ikOankaar sat naam karataa purakh nirabhau niravair akaal moorat ajoonee saibha(n) gur prasaadh
One Universal Creator God. The Name Is Truth. Creative Being Personified. No Fear. No Hatred. Image Of The Undying, Beyond Birth, Self-Existent. By Guru's Grace ~
Every word of that line is an affirmation. God is One, and the numeral stands first because unity is the ground of everything else. The Name is Truth, meaning not a label but a reality that holds. Karta Purakh is the Creator who is also present throughout the creation, not a maker who stepped away from the work. Nirbhau and nirvair are not gaps but perfections: a being under no threat has nothing to fear, and one who is in all has no one to be at enmity with. Akal Moorat places God outside time rather than merely long-lived, ajooni outside the cycle of birth, saibhang dependent on nothing. The line closes by saying how this is known at all, and the answer is grace rather than cleverness.
The creating is described plainly and often. Guru Nanak Dev Ji writes
Ang 1038, and Guru Amar Daas Ji adds that the work did not end when it was finished:
Ang 951. The One who made the expanse is the One still holding it in view.
Because that reality is complete in itself, Gurbani is careful about the limits of describing it. Guru Arjan Dev Ji writes
Ang 283, placing God beyond the three qualities that everything in the created world is made of, and Guru Nanak Dev Ji says the same as
Ang 1289. This is not a shortage. It is a statement that God fits none of the categories used to sort created things, including, pointedly, ancestry and caste. In a society ordered by birth, that carries a weight beyond theology.
The same care appears when Gurbani speaks about the extent of God.
taa kee gat mit kahee na jai
His state and extent cannot be described.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji states the limit as
Ang 1025. Neither line is an admission of doubt. Both are saying that the greatness in question is larger than any account of it can be, and Gurbani would rather say so than shrink the subject to fit a description.
Then comes the turn that matters most for a person reading it. All of the above could leave God safely distant, and Gurbani will not allow that.
ghaT ghaT braham pasaariaa bhaiee pekhai sunai hajoor
In each and every heart, God is contained, O Siblings of Destiny; He sees, and hears, and is ever-present with us.
The verbs are the point. Not merely present, but seeing and hearing, and with us. Guru Arjan Dev Ji presses it again as a plain correction,
Ang 736, and then names where the mistake actually lies:
Ang 680. God has not moved away. The belief that God is far off is ours.
So the whole answer holds together. The One who is beyond form, beyond time and beyond measuring is the same One seated in every body, watching and listening. Almost all of Gurbani's practical instruction follows from that second half. If the reality being sought is already within, the work is not travel or acquisition. It is recognition, and that is what Naam, the Guru's word, and the company of the sangat are for.

ikOankaar sat naam karataa purakh nirabhau niravair akaal moorat ajoonee saibha(n) gur prasaadh
taa kee gat mit kahee na jai
