Answer

What does Gurbani say about death?

In short

Gurbani speaks about death constantly and calmly. The stay here is described as a single night in a guest house, the departure as certain and the hour as not ours to set. What happens afterwards is left largely unanswered, and the silence is deliberate. The attention goes instead to the life before it, and to a second kind of death that Gurbani values more: dying to the self through the Guru's Shabad while still alive, after which, it says, one does not die again.

The image Gurbani uses most for a human life is not a journey or a battle. It is a night's lodging.

jaise rain paraahune uTh chalaseh parabhaat

Like an overnight guest, you shall arise and depart in the morning.

Guru Arjan Dev Ji  ·  Ang 50

Guru Arjan Dev Ji sharpens it by naming the mismatch between the stay and our plans for it: Ang 212. The guest is booked for one night and is making arrangements for years.

The certainty is stated without softening and without exception. Ang 936, and removes the idea that rank changes anything: Ang 931. Sheikh Farid Ji turns it into an instruction about where to put your attention: Ang 1380. That is not morbidity. It is a correction of scale, aimed at a person spending a short stay furnishing it.

When Gurbani describes the moment itself, the language is plain and physical rather than consoling.

nau dhar Thaake hukam sachai ha(n)s giaa gainaare

The nine doors are closed by the True Lord's Command, and the swan-soul takes flight into the skies.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji  ·  Ang 580

Guru Nanak Dev Ji states it more simply still, ੨ Ang 418, and Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji notes what the same body becomes to the people around it: Ang 536. There is no attempt to make the scene gentle.

What is striking is how little Gurbani says about what comes next. Guru Nanak Dev Ji leaves it open in as many words: Ang 753. Bhagat Kabeer Ji asks the same question elsewhere on Ang 327 without answering it. A tradition that wanted to console could have filled that space easily, and this one does not.

The reason becomes clear once a second kind of death appears in the text, and it is this one Gurbani treats as the important one.

sabadh marai so mar rahai fir marai na dhoojee vaar

One who dies in the Shabad is beyond death, and shall never die again.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji  ·  Ang 58

This is dying to haumai while still alive, in the Guru's Shabad, and the consequence given is that the dying does not have to happen again. Read against everything above, the two deaths are being compared. One is certain, out of our hands and not worth fearing. The other is available now, is entirely the point, and is the only one the verses ask a person to do anything about.

jaise rain paraahune uTh chalaseh parabhaat

nau dhar Thaake hukam sachai ha(n)s giaa gainaare

sabadh marai so mar rahai fir marai na dhoojee vaar
