Answer
What does Gurbani say about attachment to family?
In short
This is one of the places where Gurbani is most often misread. It says repeatedly that family does not go with you, and calls attachment to them bandhan, bondage. It never says leave them. Guru Nanak Dev Ji's own life settles the question, and the tradition has always been householder. What the verses attack is not love but moh, which is the belief that these relationships are permanent and will hold you. The instruction is to keep the family and stop treating it as the ground you stand on.
Guru Amar Daas Ji states the observation, and it is worth noticing how carefully it is phrased.
dhekh kuTa(n)b moh lobhaanaa chaladhiaa naal na jaiee
Beholding your family, you are lured away by emotional attachment, but when you leave, they will not go with you.
Not that the family is bad, and not that looking at them is wrong. The sequence is: you look, you are drawn in, and then they do not come. He repeats it in the second person elsewhere:
Ang 918. Bhagat Kabeer Ji gives the same list without commentary:
Ang 1252.
Guru Arjan Dev Ji adds the piece that explains rather than merely states.
maat pitaa banitaa sut ba(n)dhap isaT meet ar bhaiee || poorab janam ke mile sa(n)jogee a(n)teh ko na sahaiee ||1
Mother, father, spouse, children, relatives, lovers, friends and siblings meet, having been associated in previous lives; but none of them will be your companion and support in the end. ||1||
Met by association from before, and no help at the end. That is a description of a relationship as real and as temporary at once, and it is the whole position in one line. The people are genuinely yours. They are also not going where you are going.
The strong word appears next, and it is the one that causes the misreading.
Ang 1147. Bandhan is bondage, and Guru Ram Das Ji uses koorr of the attachment itself:
Ang 1424. Read alone, those lines could be taken as a call to walk away.
They are not, and the reason is in what Gurbani says about the world in the same breath.
sagal jagat hai jaise supanaa binasat lagat na baar ||1|| rahaau
The whole world is just like a dream; it will pass away in an instant. ||1||Pause||
Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji is not telling anyone to leave the world, any more than a person is told to leave a dream. Guru Nanak Dev Ji uses the same figure:
Ang 18. And Guru Ram Das Ji puts the family in exactly that category:
Ang 305. Temporary, coming and going, and seen.
So the instruction is about how a thing is held, not whether it is held. Guru Amar Daas Ji's line makes the distinction as sharply as it can be made:
Ang 232. What is denied is not the relationship but the permanence a person tries to lean on it for.
The practical shape of this is the householder's life, which Sikhi has kept from the beginning. Earn honestly, raise a family, feed others, and stop asking the family to be what only the Lasting One can be. The verses are hard on moh precisely because they are not asking anyone to leave.
